Chimney Cap Installation in Richardson, TX: Rusted Flashing and an Open Joint Found

Ember Chimney & Fireplace installed a new chimney cap on a painted brick chimney in Richardson, TX in September 2026. While on the roof, our technician also photographed two things the homeowner should know about: rusted flashing along the roofline and a mortar joint that had opened up.
The home is in the 75080 ZIP, the same part of Richardson as UT Dallas.
What We Found
The chimney is painted white brick. Where it meets the roof, the metal flashing had rust along its edges.

Higher up on the chimney, one of the mortar joints had opened. You can see the gap between the bricks in this photo and in the short video at the top of this page.

These are the two most common ways rain gets into a chimney. Flashing that rusts or pulls loose lets water into the attic. Open joints let water soak into the brick, and in winter that water freezes and pushes the bricks apart.
What We Did
We installed a new chimney cap that covers the top of the chimney. It has a flat metal lid and mesh sides. Smoke leaves through the mesh, while rain, birds and leaves stay out.
