How Much Does a Chimney Cap Cost Installed?

Stainless steel chimney cap on a repaired crown of a brick chimney, installed by Ember

A chimney cap costs $300 to $700 installed in Dallas–Fort Worth (Lowes Chimney Sweep, 2026) and $200 to $850 nationally, with custom multi-flue caps at $1,400 to $2,500 (HomeGuide, Brown Chimney). Ember Chimney & Fireplace gives a free written estimate for any cap or chase cover, with a crown check and photos, before the cap is ordered.

Here is what is in the price, what makes a cap cost more, and why a missing cap is the most expensive cheap part on the house.

What Makes a Chimney Cap Cost More

  • Number of flues. One flue, one standard cap. Two or three flues close together need a custom multi-flue cap that covers the whole crown.
  • Material. Stainless is the standard. Copper doubles the price for looks. Galvanized is cheaper and rusts out in a few years.
  • Size and shape. Oversize, round or oval flues need a non-stock cap.
  • Roof height and pitch. A steep two-story roof takes more time and gear than a single-story ranch.
  • What the crown looks like. A cap mounts to the flue tile or the crown. A cracked crown gets photographed and quoted separately; see our post on why a cracked crown is an emergency.

Why a Missing Cap Costs More Than a Cap

  • Rain down the flue rusts the damper ($200 to $600 to replace nationally) and the firebox floor.
  • Water on the smoke shelf mixes with creosote into an acid that eats mortar joints.
  • Chimney swifts, squirrels and raccoons nest in open flues; removal and sanitization after animals costs more than a cap.
  • A nest or debris blockage pushes carbon monoxide into the house.
  • Embers from an open flue land on the roof; the cap’s screen stops them.

FAQ

Questions, answered

How much does a chimney cap cost installed?

A chimney cap costs $300 to $700 installed in Dallas–Fort Worth and $200 to $850 nationally (HomeGuide, 2026). Custom multi-flue caps run $1,400 to $2,500. Ember gives a free written estimate after measuring the flue and checking the crown.

How much is a chimney cap by itself?

A stainless steel single-flue cap is $50 to $500 at retail depending on size and grade. Labor to install one is $125 to $350 nationally. Ember's estimate covers the cap, the climb and a check of the crown it sits on.

What does a custom multi-flue chimney cap cost?

Nationally $1,400 to $2,500, because the cap is fabricated to the chimney's measurements and covers the whole crown. Ember measures on site and quotes it in writing before fabrication.

How much does a chase cover cost?

A stainless steel chase cover for a factory-built chimney is measured and fabricated to the chase, so it is quoted per chimney. Rusted galvanized chase covers are the most common leak on prefab chimneys, and the estimate from Ember is free.

Stainless steel or copper?

Stainless. It lasts the life of the chimney, does not rust and costs a fraction of copper. Copper is a look, not a performance upgrade. Avoid galvanized caps; they rust through in a few Texas summers.

Can I install a chimney cap myself?

On a single-story ranch with a standard flue tile, some people do. The risk is the roof, a wrong size that blows off, and missing the cracked crown under it. Ember's install includes a crown check and photos.

Is a chimney cap really necessary in Texas and Georgia?

Yes. Rain down an open flue rusts the damper and firebox, and both states have chimney swifts, squirrels and raccoons that nest in open chimneys. A cap with a spark arrestor screen also keeps embers off the roof.
