How Much Does Chimney Relining Cost?

Chimney relining costs $1,500 to $4,500 in Dallas–Fort Worth for a standard stainless steel liner (Lowes Chimney Sweep) and $2,500 to $6,500 for taller or insulated systems (ALC Chimney Service); nationally it averages $1,200 to $4,600 (HomeGuide, 2026). Ember Chimney & Fireplace gives a free written relining estimate after a Level 2 camera inspection, with the footage and the price in writing before any work.
This guide covers what is in a relining price, why quotes for the same chimney can differ by thousands, and when relining is required rather than optional.

What Makes Relining Cost More
- Height. Liners are priced partly per foot. A two-story chimney is twice the liner of a one-story.
- Diameter and grade. A 6-inch gas liner costs less than an 8-inch wood liner. 316 stainless for wood and 304 for gas; the alloy has to match the fuel or it corrodes.
- Insulation. Wood-burning liners and exterior chimneys need an insulation wrap or pour to keep the flue warm and the draft right. It adds material and a day.
- Offsets. A flue that jogs around a fireplace above or a roofline needs a flexible liner worked through the bend.
- Old tiles. If the clay flue is too narrow for the right-size liner, the tiles are broken out first. That is the most expensive line on any relining quote.
- Connection and top. The connection at the smoke chamber, a new top plate and a cap are part of every proper reline.
When Relining Is Required
- Cracked, spalled or missing flue tiles found on a Level 2 inspection.
- After a chimney fire. Heat cracks tiles even when the fire seemed small.
- A new insert or stove. The liner must be sized to the appliance, per NFPA 211 and the manufacturer.
- A gas appliance in a wood flue. Condensation from the cooler exhaust destroys mortar joints.
- No liner at all. Older homes and some prefab chase conversions.
A liner is not needed for a sound clay flue used with the open fireplace it was built for. A yearly chimney inspection is what tells you which case you have; see what an inspection costs.
