How Much Does a Chimney Sweep Cost?

Ember Chimney & Fireplace charges $149 for a chimney sweep, and that price includes a safety inspection and a photo report. Across the U.S., homeowners pay $129 to $381 for a chimney sweep, about $254 on average, according to Angi’s 2026 cost data.

The rest of this guide covers what the price includes, what makes a sweep cost more, and how to tell if a low price is really low.

What Ember’s $149 Chimney Safety Package Includes

The Chimney Safety Package is the one price we lead with everywhere. It covers:

  • Chimney sweep: the flue, smoke chamber and firebox cleaned of soot and creosote.
  • Safety inspection: the chimney checked from top to bottom, including the damper, crown and cap.
  • Photo report: pictures of what the technician found, so you see the inside of your chimney yourself.
  • Repair credit: if the inspection finds a problem and you book the repair within 30 days, the full $149 is credited toward it.

One package per household. Repairs, caps and installs are quoted in writing before any work starts.

National Chimney Sweep Prices

Sweeps are priced differently across the country. These are the national ranges published in 2026:

SourceTypical rangeAverage
Angi$129 to $381$254
HomeGuide$150 to $375$275

Ember’s $149 package sits at the low end of those ranges and still includes the inspection and photo report that many companies charge for on their own.

What Makes a Chimney Sweep Cost More

A few things move the price of any chimney sweep:

  • Number of flues. Each flue is cleaned on its own, so a chimney with two or three flues takes longer.
  • How much creosote is inside. Light soot brushes out. Thick, glazed creosote takes more time and different tools.
  • Type of appliance. A wood stove or fireplace insert often has to be pulled out or worked around to reach the flue.
  • Roof height and pitch. Tall, steep roofs need more safety gear and time.
  • The inspection level. A Level 2 inspection with a camera scan of the whole flue costs more than a basic Level 1 check. Learn the difference on our chimney inspection page.

Is a Very Cheap Chimney Sweep a Good Deal?

Be careful with sweeps advertised far below the national range. A low price sometimes covers only a quick brush of the flue with no inspection, and the real bill comes later as a list of repairs with no photos to back them up.

If you’re booking before winter, run through our first cold front fireplace checklist too. Before you book any sweep, ask three questions:

  1. Does the price include an inspection, and what level?
  2. Will I get photos of what you find?
  3. Will I get a written price before any repair starts?

At Ember, the answer to all three is yes.

Signs Your Chimney Needs a Sweep Now

You may need a sweep before your yearly visit if you notice:

  • A strong smoky or campfire smell, mostly on hot or humid days.
  • Black flakes of creosote falling into the firebox.
  • Smoke coming into the room instead of going up the chimney.
  • Fires that are hard to start or keep going.

If a chimney fire ever starts, get everyone out of the house and call 911 first.

FAQ

Questions, answered

How much does a chimney sweep cost?

Ember's chimney sweep costs $149 as part of the Chimney Safety Package, which also includes a safety inspection and a photo report. Nationally, most homeowners pay $129 to $381, with an average of about $254 (Angi, 2026).

What is included in the $149 Chimney Safety Package?

A chimney sweep of the flue, smoke chamber and firebox, a top-to-bottom safety inspection, and a photo report of what we found. If you book a repair within 30 days, the full $149 is credited toward it. One package per household.

Why do some chimney sweeps cost more than others?

Price changes with the number of flues, how much creosote is inside, the type of fireplace or stove, the height and pitch of the roof, and what inspection comes with the sweep.

How often do I need a chimney sweep?

Have the chimney inspected once a year and swept when the inspection finds buildup, as the NFPA 211 fire safety standard recommends. If you burn wood often, you may need a sweep more than once a season.

Do you offer senior or military discounts?

Yes. Ember offers a 10% senior discount and a 5% military discount. Ask for it when you book.

Will a chimney sweep make a mess in my house?

No. Our Zero-Mess Guarantee means your floors and furniture look the same when we leave as when we arrived.
